TANTO mounted in SHIRASAYA. The blade is shinogi zukuri on one side and katakiriha on the other, nagasa 30.8 cm, nakago pierced with two mekugi-ana and engraved under the habaki with the Tokugawa triple hollyhock leaf môn; tang signed Yasutsugu Namban tetsu (wo) motte (made with foreign steel) on one side and in Edo, Musashi province on the other. Blade engraved with a dragon surrounding a ken on one side and gomabashi on the other. Blade work: 3rd generation Yasutsugu. Minor dents, cracked shirasaya. Japan, Edo period, 17th century, circa Kanbun era, ca. 1661-1672. PROVENANCE: acquired by the current owner's great-grandfather, General Etienne de Villaret, then in the early stages of his career as military attaché to the Japanese embassy in Tokyo, at the end of the 19th century, and in the family by descent.
