Louis Charles TIMBAL (Paris, 1821-1880) - Lot 114
Louis Charles TIMBAL (Paris, 1821-1880) The Sermon of Saint Rose of Viterbo Oil on canvas Old restorations and small accident lower left 141 x 172 cm Related works : -Painting from the 1861 Salon, no. 2960 -Commented on by Théophile Gautier in the Abécédaire du Salon de 1861, p.337-338: "Un sermon de Sainte Rose de Viterbe, by M. Timbal, is a painting of high style and pure, profound religious feeling. The young saint, aged twelve, preaches in the street; she raises her little clasped hands to heaven, and her citizens, bishops, monks, men-at-arms, burghers, listen to her with respect and forget their discord. A sober, harmonious and gentle color coats this composition, which revives, without pastiche, the spirit of the Middle Ages."
