Ordinary of the Mass. Book (format 18.5 x 14.5 cm) illuminat - Lot 38
Ordinary of the Mass. Book (format 18.5 x 14.5 cm) illuminated throughout (59 pp.) in an embossed full tan calf binding. The first board shows the crucifixion of Christ surrounded by 2 statues (saint and saint), the second board a stained-glass rosette (incised signature of the bookbinder Martin-Sabon "MS" in a circle), spine with muted nerves. The illumination is based on the classics of this genre: fantastical or real animals, landscapes, devils, floral decorations... Very fine late 19th-century work by Nathalie Martin-Sabon (1855-1931), a renowned painter, sculptor, ceramist and bookbinder of her day, co-founder of the Union des dames des Arts décoratifs school. She was the wife of Félix Martin-Sabon, famous photographer of French monuments. The Musée d'Orsay and the Musée Gustave Moreau preserve sumptuous bookbindings by her. She took part in several bookbinding exhibitions between 1900 and 1914, but her work is rare (no sales in recent years). Her library label with address (rue Mansart, Paris) and book title "Livre de mariage".
