Bernard Séjourné (1947-1994) - Lot 307
Bernard Séjourné (1947-1994) Portrait Isorel Signed lower right 47 x 34 cm Bernard Séjourné, born November 20, 1947 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, began his artistic career after secondary school. Recognized as the most emblematic painter and sculptor of the École de la Beauté, Séjourné distinguished himself with works celebrating women, symbolizing beauty, elegance and grace. His favorite subjects were women, flowers and sometimes landscapes. He favored acrylics on large surfaces of Masonite, a technique that enabled him to accentuate an effect of movement through the use of fluid lines. Séjourné's palette oscillated between cool and tropical hues. His works, characterized by an exceptional mastery of space and volume, tended towards abstraction while retaining referential elements, as noted by Gérald Alexis in his book "Peintres Haitiens" (Editions Cercle d'Art, 2000). Séjourné exhibited his work at the Calfou and Salon Esso in Port-au-Prince in 1965, took part in the Festival des Arts Nègres in Dakar in 1956, the Universal Exhibition in Montreal in 1957 and the Institut français d'Haïti in 1972. His works are highly prized by Haitian art collectors. After his death, Séjourné became an artist much sought after by collectors. He even received a special commission from Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who chose one of his paintings to adorn the label of the 1986 vintage bottle of Château Mouton-Rothschild Pauillac wine.
