Savary, Claude-Étienne. - Letters on Greece following those - Lot 85
Savary, Claude-Étienne. - Letters on Greece following those on Egypt. Paris, Onfroi, 1788. In-8, green half calf, smooth spine, yellow edges (19th century) - The last page (p. 362) has been glued to the spine and is no longer legible. Some leaves are badly foxed. Labyrinth plate missing - [2] ff. n. ch., 362 pp. folding map. Originally from Brittany, Savary became friends in Paris with Lemonnier, physician to the Comte de Provence, the future Louis XVIII, before leaving for Egypt and Greece, where he stayed for several months. He sent these 49 highly interesting letters to Lemonnier's wife. Essentially about Crete, where friendship is a great honor, the Dodecanese islands, the Cyclades and their inhabitants, they depict the living conditions and character of the inhabitants, whose customs he describes under Ottoman occupation, perpetuating anti-Turkish sentiment. Provenance: Château de Marcellus
