Savary. - Lettres sur l'Égypte, Où l'on offre le parallèle des mœurs anciennes et modernes de ses habitans, où l'on décrit l'état, le commerce... Paris, Onfroi, 1785-1786. 3 volumes in-8, contemporary fawn calf, triple gilt fillet on covers, ornate smooth spines, green morocco title-pieces, chiselled edges, marbled edges, covers rubbed, defects at upper jaws of volumes 2 and 3, corners rubbed, some wetness, foxing and stains not serious - X, 395 pp.., [1 p.], [1 f.], 2 folding maps; [1 f.], 310 pp. 1 folding map; [1 f.], 310 pp. First edition. Savary (1750-1788) went on a three-year expedition to Egypt. His long stay enabled him to learn Arabic and master it perfectly. In 1783, he published a highly-regarded translation of the Koran, which was reprinted many times, even into the 20th century. In a brilliant style, Savary, who died too young, gives many very picturesque descriptions of sites and monuments as well as society, and his work was a great success on publication.
