La Haye, s.n., 1756. 3 vol. in-12, marbled havana calf, ornate ribbed spine, red morocco title-pieces, fillet on the edges, red edges - Several corners pierced, headbands worn - [3] ff. n. ch., III, [1], 368 ; [4], 412 ; [4], 439 pp. Engraved bookplate of Anthony Chamier, (1725-1780) financier and under-secretary of state for war who belonged to a circle of London literati and artists. Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Marquis de Torcy, was an important French diplomat and a key link in the various international congresses that led to the establishment of the Peace of Utrecht and the end of the War of the Spanish Succession. Between the Treaties of Riswick and Utrecht, France lost Acadia (Quebec) and its other American territories, as well as its dream of hegemony over Europe, but gained a relatively lasting peace and the security of its national territory. Although published anonymously, the author must have been sufficiently well known for the bookbinder to indicate Mémoires de Torcy on the title-pieces. Provenance: Château de Marcellus
