Polydorii Vergilii. - De Rerum inventoribus Lib. VIII... Lyo - Lot 33
Polydorii Vergilii. - De Rerum inventoribus Lib. VIII... Lyon, Jacog Boyer, 1560, large in-16, bound in full contemporary calf with boards decorated in the Duseuil style and with a central cartouche, spine ribbed with mute - spine restored with lacunae, corners pierced - [12 ff. title, epigram, preface to the 1499 edition], 676 pp, [16 ff. index]. Printed in italics. This encyclopedic work records the history of human inventions, scientific discoveries and customs from the earliest times. First published in 1499 and reprinted several times, it was banned for its criticism of monks, priestly celibacy and the abuse of indulgences. With the offending parts removed, the work was republished in French in 1575.
