After Joseph VAN LERIUS (1823-1876) - Lot 103
After Joseph VAN LERIUS (1823-1876) Lady Godiva Oil on canvas. 81 x 60 cm According to legend, Lady Godiva, wife of the Lord of Coventry in England in the year 1000, crossed the market square naked on horseback. This spectacular parade was the result of a challenge from her husband: he lightened the city's taxes on condition that she agreed to ride in the simplest of clothes. Our painting, based on one by the Belgian painter Van Lerius, depicts this episode in a discreet way, a moment before she rides.
