Henri Pierre PICOU (1824-1895) - Lot 102
Henri Pierre PICOU (1824-1895) Lesbie's Sparrow, 1874 Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right. Titled on the back on a label. 61 x 76 cm PROVENANCE: former Adryan de Wezele collection. Adryan de Wezele was a famous collector of Henri Picou's works, which he exhibited at the Salons. This is a frequent subject among neo-Greeks. Le Moineau de Lesbie is an 1849 play by Armand Barthet, inspired by the poems of Catullus and performed for nine years by Rachel. Three neo-Greek paintings of the 1860s were inspired by it: Brun's Moineau de Lesbie, exhibited at the 1861 Salon, Mazerolles' 1866 painting, reproduced by Goupil, and Picou's painting. According to Sarah Betite's research, Wezele was Picou's official dealer from 1870 to 1885, so we can date the painting to this period. We would like to thank Sarah Betite for the information she kindly provided.
