Bears workshop stamp lower right (Lugt n° 2104) 22.8 x 28.5 cm Our drawing is a study for the figure of Calliope in the lower right of the painting Le bois sacré cher aux Arts et aux Muses painted by Puvis de Chavannes in 1883 and exhibited at the Salon in 1884. Commissioned for the Lyon Museum, the painting was mounted on the north wall of the stairwell. Three other compositions were painted in the following years, again for the same stairwell. A reduction, painted between 1884 and 1889, is kept at the Art Institute of Chicago. Suzanne Valadon is said to have posed for all the figures, including those of the young boys (see Catalogue of the exhibition Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898), Paris, Grand Palais, 1976-1977, no. 174 to 177, reproduced).
