After Jean-Victor BERTIN (1767-1842) - Lot 92
After Jean-Victor BERTIN (1767-1842) Shepherd and sheep in a classical landscape Oil on canvas. 16 x 21 cm We would like to thank Messrs. Damien Dumarquez and Jean-Louis Litron, authors of the Jean-Victor Bertin catalog raisonné currently in preparation, for the information they kindly provided. In 1788, Jean-Victor Bertin became a pupil of Valenciennes, who encouraged him to paint Italian landscapes in the manner of Poussin and Lorrain. His landscapes, executed in Italy, are for the most part recomposed in the studio, according to the rules of classical conception inherited from Poussin. Bertin is one of the great names in French neo-classical landscape painting, often depicting ancient ruins. His studio was frequented by generations of artists such as Corot, Michallon, Coignet, Fleury, Rémond and Roqueplan, and inspired a number of landscape artists.
