FIGURE NGBAKA or NGBANDI OUBANGUI, Democratic Republic of Co - Lot 24
FIGURE NGBAKA or NGBANDI OUBANGUI, Democratic Republic of Congo Wood with brown patina, accident. H. 37 cm Anthropomorphic effigy, arms attached to a truncated cone-shaped bust forming two parentheses framing the umbilicus, short legs in the same solid volume as the buttocks. On the back, a double Y-shaped line marks the spinal hollow and the protruding shoulder blades. The ovoid head is sculpted with an abstract yet very present face, divided into two areas by the bridge of the nose. This type of sculpture, protective of the village whose entrance it marked, would represent the Ngbirondo guardian spirit. PROVENANCE: former Jo de Buck collection, Brussels. Cf. Marc Leo Felix, 100 peoples of Zaire and their sculpture. The handbook, Zaire Basin art research foundation, Brussel, 1987, p. 123, fig. 1 and 2.
