CHURINGA ABORIGEN BOARD, Australia Hardwood with brown patina L. 64 cm Large Aboriginal churinga with narrative decoration carved in a series of split arcs on either side of a central motif in concentric circles. Like a mnemonic "map", the motifs referred to a legend from the Dreamtime (a mythological era foundational to Aboriginal culture), and enabled its recounting. Sacred objects, churingas were preserved in a tapa or animal skin envelope and hidden in secret places outside initiation periods, during which they were displayed. Quite ancient.
