KAP-KAP, New Ireland, Papua New Guinea Stoup (tridacna gigas), tortoise shell, vegetable fibers. D. 6 cm A disc carved from a stoup shell and adorned with a circular shell lace, serrated at the periphery, the solid center adorned with radiating cardinal eye motifs. Extreme dexterity was required to create this type of adornment, both to work the tridacna gigas and to cut the tortoiseshell with extreme finesse. PROVENANCE: former Jef Van der Straete collection, Lasne, Brussels; Christie's Paris sale, December 11, 2007, reproduced under lot 380 and on the 4th cover; former private collection, France.
