H. 52 cm Depicting a stylized hornbill, an important totemic figure among the Abelam people, largely covered by brightly colored pigments that were locally believed to have magical powers. This piece was probably carved to replace an earlier one. PROVENANCE: former Marie-José Guigues collection, Paris.
