Marcel Damboise (1903-1992)
Portrait of Danielle Damboise
Petite nature head in white marble
Total height 19 cm, on a natural wood base
This lovely marble head is a touching portrait of Danielle Damboise, the daughter of sculptor Marcel Damboise. Born into a modest family in Marseille, he abandoned his training at the École des Beaux-Arts to become a stonemason. In 1926, he moved to Paris and quickly entered the artistic world following his marriage to Yvette Dorignac, daughter of painter Georges Dorignac, in 1928. Alongside other sculptors such as Jean Osouf, Jean Carton and Paul Cornet, Marcel Damboise joined the Groupe des Neuf founded by poet Juliette Darle in 1963. A fervent advocate of figuration, influenced by the sculptors of the late 19th century and members of the Schnegg gang, he produced numerous female portraits from life, mainly of his wife and daughter.
