During his stay at the Villa Medici from 1902 to 1906, Henri Bouchard, influenced by the realist style of Jean-François Millet, Constantin Meunier and Aimé-Jules Dalou, roamed the Roman countryside, capturing the peasants he met. He painted this Reaper during the second year of his stay in Rome. The Musée de la Piscine in Roubaix exhibits many of his works in a room recreating his studio.
