Ernest Damé (1845-1920) Cephalus and Procris Model created circa 1875 Original terracotta H. 51 cm Small firing cracks, Procris' right index finger broken Inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses, Ernest Damé presented a first plaster cast of Cephalus and Procris at the 1875 Salon. The group was commissioned in marble by the French government in 1881 and donated to the town of Laon in 1883. Ernest Damé, a pupil of sculptors Duret, Lequesne, Cavelier and Guillaume at the École des Beaux-Arts de Pa- ris, drew his inspiration from ancient myths and created several groups, including Diane et Endymion (Fonderie du Val d'Osne) and Fugit amor, also known as Psyché et l'Amour (1879, destroyed).
