Doré" on the rock H. 59.5 cm, on its original cherry-red marble base H. 7 cm Inspired by two of his earlier graphic works, Le Massacre des innocents (1869-1872) and Le Serpent d'airain (1872-1877), Gustave Doré's L'Effroi is a bold composition, accentuated by the sense of precarious balance conveyed by the mother standing on tiptoe. The author captures this pathetic drama with compassion and a keen sense of the characters' psychology.
