Born into a family of artists and archaeologists, he trained as a sculptor in the workshops of Jules Cavelier and Eugène Guillaume at the École nationale des Beaux-Arts. He began exhibiting at the Salon in 1874 and received numerous commissions. In 1906, he succeeded Paul Colin as Inspector General for the teaching of drawing. Probably the sculpture presented at the 1931 Exposition Coloniale Internationale (Cat. N°429).
