A pupil of Lequien and Jouffroy, Justin-Chrysostome Sanson won the Premier Prix de Rome in 1861. On his return in 1866, he took on numerous commissions for public statuary in Paris, for the Palais du Louvre, the Hôtel de Ville and the Opéra Garnier. He exhibited his monument designs and numerous portraits at the Salon.
