Marino Groppelli (1662-1728) - Lot 18
Marino Groppelli (1662-1728) Veiled Madonna circa 1700 Marble medallion H. 25 x W. 21 cm, in blackened wood frame H. 38 x W. 33 cm Marino Groppelli was the eldest brother of a sibling group of Venetian il- lustre sculptors in the first half of the 18th century. Our relief can be compared with the Madonna and Child in the Cathedral of San Donnà di Piave, or with what may be considered his masterpiece: the sculpted angel of the Allegory of the Victory of the Dardanelles in the Basilica of Saints John and Paul in Venice.
