Oval-shaped WATCH signed D. Martinot in Paris in silver-plated brass. Silver dial decorated with animals and birds. Hour numerals, blued steel hand. Gilt brass movement, escapement with meeting wheel, later balance wheel, fusee with gut rope, engraved and chased cock on one foot, baluster-shaped pillars. Silver-plated brass case, inside lid engraved with a sundial, missing gnomon, compass and needle. Late 16th-early 17th century. Missing, wear on outer lid flaps. Engraving partly faded. 38 x 65 mm Denis MARTINOT (1550-1611), watchmaker to Henri IV and Louis XIII, was part of a famous dynasty of watchmakers.
