Jean Baptiste de la ROSE (Marseille 1612-1687) Naval battle Oil on canvas. Signed in the center on the barrel JB ROSE INF. 75 x 104 cm Jean Baptiste de La Rose was a painter specializing in naval scenes and seascapes. After a short career as a soldier, he began his apprenticeship in François Mimault's studio in 1631. Around 1638, he moved to Toulon, where he was entrusted with all the city's port decorations, with the title of "maître peintre entretenu". In 1667, he began decorating the ship Royal Louis. His marine paintings were highly prized by court nobles such as Colbert and Jean II d'Estrées.
