Bears no. 199 at top. 42.5 x 35 cm Painter and engraver Carlo Labruzzi worked with English travelers on the Grand Tour from the 1780s onwards. In 1789, he accompanied Sir Richard Colt Hoare on his project to follow the Via Appia along the itinerary laid out by the poet Horace in 38 B.C. Labruzzi was commissioned to draw the ancient ruins and villas along the route. The project was not completed, but Labruzzi did produce 226 watercolors bound in 5 volumes for Hoare. A second, less accomplished series, probably preparatory drawings, also exists.
