Gaston Hauchecorne (1880-1945) - Lot 196
Gaston Hauchecorne (1880-1945) Laughing Asian Terracotta Signed "G. Hauchecorne". Stamped "Épreuve d'artiste" with the artist's monogram and dated "1943". H. 18.2 cm This bust of a laughing Asian is representative of the work of French artist Gaston Hauchecorne. Brother of Armand Hauchecorne, permanent consul to the Chinese Empire, he was an interpreter and professor at Peking University at the turn of the century, before returning to France as a diplomat. His ethnographic work, with its humorous touch, was exhibited from 1922 onwards at the Exposition nationale coloniale in Marseille, and in the salons of the Société nationale des beaux-arts in the 1920s. These models met with some success, being published in bronze or terracotta by Susses Frères or Goldscheider.
