Louis-Ernest Barrias (1841-1905) Young girl from Bou Saâda Bronze with brown patina Signed "E. Barrias Bears the founder's mark "Susse Frs Edts Paris", the founder's circular insert and the stamp "SYNDICAT DES FABRICANTS DE BRONZE UNIS". Inspired by Achille Guillaumet's painting Cardeuses de laine à Bou-Saâda (1885, oil on canvas, Rouen, Musée des Beaux-Arts, inv. 1888.2), the Jeune fille de Bou-Saâda was designed to adorn the Orientalist painter's tomb in the Montmartre cemetery in Paris. In 1890, Louis-Ernest Barrias presented a wax version at the Salon, followed by a plaster version at the 1900 Universal Exhibition.
