Théodore Rivière (1857-1912) Hamilcar's Elephant Circa 1900 Bronze with light brown patina Signed "Théodore Rivière Bears the founder's stamp "Siot Decauville". Located and dated "Tunis 92". Numbered "7088 H. 30.7 x W. 21 x D. 27 cm, resting on its original black Belgian marble base. On his return from Tunis, Théodore Rivière presented several works inspired by Gustave Flaubert's novel Salammbô at the Salon: L'Éléphant d'Hamilcar in 1893 and Salammbô chez Matho in 1895. Both Orientalist themes met with great success. Published in 1862, Flaubert's novel made famous the legend of Hamilcar's elephant, which gave the city of Carthage victory over the mercenaries.
