Bound in red half-maroquin with corners, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and gilt lettering, gilt fillets encircling the leather on the boards, boards covered with marbled paper (a few small tears to the paper, not serious; a few tears to the paper). Beautiful binding of the time. Edition published after the Alphonse Lemerre edition of 1893 illustrated by Myrbach. Numbered copy no. 7, out of an edition of 75 on Hollande. - MIRBEAU (Octave). L'Abbé Jules. Paris, Paul Ollendorff, 1888. In-12, [3] uncounted ff. + 322 pp. + [1] blank f., covers preserved; autograph dispatch from the author "[...] his friend, Octave Mirbeau" but the name of the dedicatee has been cut off (upper part of the false title). Bound in brown half-chagrin, smooth spine, publishing date pushed to the tail of the spine, gilt lettering, boards covered with marbled paper. Corners dulled, rubbing to the spines. Some interior foxing. First edition. Mirbeau's second novel, evocation of a "damned" priest, in revolt against his Church and against a stifling and oppressive society, perpetually torn between the needs of his flesh and his "postulations" towards heaven.
