TRONCONIC CUP with bird. - Lot 265
TRONCONIC CUP with bird. Clay ceramic decorated with brown and red slip on white slip, decorated with a bird and festoon border. Restorations, small stoppages. Northeast Iran, 10th century D. 18,7 H. 7,5 cm PROVENANCE: Boisgirard sale, Arts d'Orient, Drouot, Paris, March 20, 1996, lot 22 This bowl is close to the so-called "Sari" group without having the same decorative characteristics. The name of Sari was given by Arthur Pope because merchants had reported to him that these pieces came from this city in northern Iran, but the only known excavated ceramics come in fact from Gurgan. This bowl could just as well have come from Nishapur in Khorasan.
