Albert BESNARD (1849-1934) - Lot 97
Albert BESNARD (1849-1934) The Stream in the Sabine, 1920 Oil on canvas. Signed, dated and located Rome lower right. Lining. 143 x 117 cm Provenance : bought from Louis Besnard, son of the artist in 1950 ; private collection EXHIBITIONS : - Galerie Bernheim Jeune ; - International Art Exhibition of the City of Venice, 1930; - Exhibition Albert Besnard, Musée Eugène Boudin, Honfleur, July-September 2008, n°22 reproduced in colors p.111 of the catalog. Our painting is an oil executed in Rome, in 1920, while Besnard was director of the Villa Medici. The painter will realize only one more decoration, in 1921, for the liner Le Paris, because "his legs do not carry him enough". He also satisfied his desire for decorations by painting large canvases such as Le Ruisseau dans la Sabine which proves, in addition to his qualities as a landscape painter, his great sense of composition.
