Jeanne RONGIER (Mâcon 1852 - Paris 1929) - Lot 88
Jeanne RONGIER (Mâcon 1852 - Paris 1929) Louis XIII and Richelieu after the condemnation of Cinq- March On its original canvas. Signed lower left J. Rongier. 83 x 107 cm EXHIBITION : Paris, Salon of 1882, n°2331. The Duke of Montmorency had the mistake of listening to Marie de Médicis who was plotting against her own son King Louis XIII to put on the throne his younger son Gaston d'Orléans. When the plot was discovered, Richelieu demanded ruthless sanctions. Jeanne Rongier paints the most dramatically romantic moment: the King, having a weakness for the handsome and ambitious Duke of Montmorency, collapses while he has just given his head to Richelieu.
