Attributed to Tancrède GAZEAU de la BOUÈRE (1801- 1881) - Lot 73
Attributed to Tancrède GAZEAU de la BOUÈRE (1801- 1881) The villa of Este Oil on canvas. 100 x 170 cm Tancrède Gazeau de la Bouère began a military career as a staff captain during the Algerian expedition in 1830. He also considered a career as a painter and exhibited a View of the Pyrenees at the Paris Salon in 1827. He belonged to the generation of the travelling painters and was particularly interested in ancient archaeological sites (Temple of Luxor, 1836, M.E.T. New-York) and in Roman and Italian landscapes (Campaign of Rome, the harvest, Louvre Museum in Tours). Our painting historicizes the sumptuous Mannerist palace with a lively 16th century scene. The painter places Cardinal Hippolyte d'Este (1509-1572), governor of Tivoli and commissioner of this masterpiece by Ligorio, around one of the fountain pools in the park.
