[Chambray, Georges marquis de]. - History of the Russian Expedition By M.***. Paris, Pillet, 1823. 2 vol. in-8 in half tan basane, smooth spines decorated with gilt fillets, black morocco parts, yellow edges, false title of the second vol. repaired, and an atlas, paperback (missing a large part of the first plate) - [2 ff.], ij, 444 pp, engraving on frontispiece (passage of the Niemen); [2 ff.], 460 pp., [2 ff. catalog], 4 folding tables; atlas: [2 ff.], 5 folding maps. First edition. Georges de Chambray (1783-1848), a brilliant artillery officer, participated in all Napoleonic campaigns. He was taken prisoner at Wilna in February 1812, and sent to Ukraine. He returned to France only at the Restoration, in 1814. He then resumed service until 1829 when he was retired with the rank of Marshal of Camp. An uncommon work, well completed with the atlas. Biography published nine years after the death of Suvaroff (1730-1800), one of the military glories of Russia who remained undefeated on the battlefields.
