Mœurs provinciales, Paris, Michel Lévy Frères, Paris, 1857. 2 volumes in-12, 490 pp. [2 uncounted ff. 232 pp. + 36 pp. (publisher's catalog); 2 uncounted ff. and [233-490] pp.], covers preserved, bookseller's label pasted on the covers (the first label damaged): "Oscar Guiard Libraire relieur à Saintes. Cabinet de lecture", false titles and titles of each volume (including those of volume II). Dark blue half-chagrin with corners, spine with 5 nerves, gilt lettering, fleurons in the inter-nerve, date at the end of the spine, gilt head (spines sunned; some spotting). Binding stamped " A. Bianchi. Nice". First edition in bookstore, first printing. With the rare Michel Lévy Catalogue which ends volume I: " Catalogue de la librairie Michel Lévy Frères Editeurs " (March 1857). As published in 1857, with its rare preserved covers. In the first printing, the dedication leaf contains the mistake of "Senard" spelled "Senart" [Senard was the lawyer who defended the famous case of this novel prosecuted by the prosecutor's office of the Seine for contempt of morality; the final "d" of Senard's name was corrected in the second printing]. - The dedication "To Louis Bouilhet" does not include the opening "A". - Pages 50 and 67 not numbered. - Page 145 (line 23), "asked" instead of "wondered". - Page 290 (line 25), there is a comma after "abîme". The work had first appeared in deliveries in the columns of the Revue de Paris between October 1 and December 15, 1856.
