Les Fleurs du mal" and date on the tail of the spine : "1857". Dimensions of the book : 122 x 186 mm ; dimensions of the binding : 128 x 192 mm. A very nice copy. First edition, copy of the first edition with the six erotic poems, three of which are grouped in the table under the interior title Les Fleurs du Mal. These six poems are the following: Les Bijoux (XX); Le Léthé (XXX); A celle qui est trop gaie (XXXIX); Lesbos (LXXX); Femmes damnées (LXXXI); Les métamorphoses du vampire (LXXXVII). These first edition copies differ in the following way: p. 31 and p. 108, the current title Les Fleurs du Mal is printed Les Feurs du Mal; p. 201, the word capiteux is erroneously printed captieux; p. 45 is numbered 44. For a very long time, condemned by a judgment of the Tribunal de la Seine, the collection could not be legally reprinted. Having failed to condemn Flaubert for Madame Bovary, the authorities will find in Baudelaire an easier prey. Published in June 1857 by Poulet-Malassis and De Broise, the first edition of Les Fleurs du Mal was condemned two months later.
