La Fontaine, Jean de - A selection of fables by La Fontaine - Lot 305
La Fontaine, Jean de - A selection of fables by La Fontaine illustrated by a group of the best artists in Tokyo. Under the direction of P. Barboutau. Tokio, Imprimerie de Tsoukidji-Tokio, 1894 (stamp of Flammarion at the bottom left of the first cover). 2 volumes in-8, paperback, on crepe paper - [25 ff.], [25 ff.], 28 double-page prints in color, vignettes in text in black, some stains on the covers, small tears without missing. Original edition of the current edition after 350 copies on luxury paper. A most curious work which results from the opening of Japan to the outside world and the interest of the West for its culture. The French version of the book is intended for the French public, as the Fables had not yet been translated into Japanese. They are illustrated by Kawanabe Kyosoui (daughter of another artist Kyio-Sai), Kanô Tomonobu, Eda Sada-shiko and Kadjita Hanko, who transposed them in the landscapes of Japan, among its fauna and flora. The result is striking. Attached to the copy is a watercolor on loose paper, torn and wet.
