Quinti Horatii Flacci. - Emblemata. Imaginibus in aes incisi - Lot 250
Quinti Horatii Flacci. - Emblemata. Imaginibus in aes incisis, notisque illustrata, studio Othonis Vaenii Batavolugdunensis. Antwerp, Philippe Lisaert, 1612. In-4 bound in full antique vellum - 214 pp. Illustrated with 102 full-page plates in perfect condition by Otto Van Veen. and a title vignette (portrait of Horace in medallion). Second edition given in Antwerp like the original edition published in 1607 by Henri Verdussen. The texts of the Latin Emblemata are translated into Spanish, Italian, German and French. Otto Van Veen (1556-1629) was one of the most important and influential Antwerp painters of his time. He was, among others, the master of Peter-Paul Rubens between 1594 and 1598. His style, full of humanist erudition, remains rather archaic in the way he inscribed scenes in the landscape, but appears very innovative in the treatment of faces (cf. Aude Cordonnier, Miroir de Lille et des Pays-Bas, 1995) Rare in this condition.
