Daumier. - The Hundred and One Robert-Macaire. Composed and - Lot 300
Daumier. - The Hundred and One Robert-Macaire. Composed and drawn by M. H. Daumier, on the Ideas and Legends of M. Ch. Philipon, reduced and lithographed by MM***; text by MM. Maurice Alhoy and Louis Huart. Paris, Aubert, 1840. 2 volumes large in-8, contemporary cherry half-calf, spines decorated with gilt bookplate at the foot "Demonchy", edges speckled, minor rubbing to the spines, corners rubbed, foxing - [105 ff.], [107 f.], 101 full-page lithographs (50 for the first volume, 51 for the second). What a pessimistic vision of the 19th century society given here by Daumier and Philippon. In these vigorously captioned caricatures, Robert Macaire, their imaginary character, illustrates all the vices of the time: businessman, profiteer, whatever the job he does or the situation in which he finds himself, Macaire acts in spite of morality and good manners, only concerned with his own profit. A breathtaking album.
