[1877-1878]. 4 volumes large in-8, half red morocco, spine with gilt fleurons, gilt title on the boards (Binding of the publisher) - XV, 383 pp., [1 p.], [2 ff.], 395 pp, [1 p.], [2 ff.], 395 pp, [1 p.], [2 ff.], 399 pp, [1 p.], 4 frontispieces, numerous vignettes in text, 223 of which are full-page (50 in the first volume, 53 in the second, 69 in the third and 51 in the fourth). A very different publication from the original 1861 edition: new illustrations have been added. Texts by Balzac, Gozlan, Achard, Janin, Soulié, Karr, Nodier, Petrus Borel, Virginie Ancelot, Mélanie Waldor, Sophie de Bawr, .... illustrated by Meissonier, Daubigny, Grandville, Gavarni, Paumier, Tony-Johannot. The French are sketched in all their diversity, provincial or social: the Bressan can be compared to the Breton or the Landais, the executioner to the provincial vicar, the invalid to the old girl or the chess player, etc. Nice copy, very fresh, in its attractive publisher's binding.
