[Dulaurens, Abbot Henri-Joseph.] - Étrennes aux gens d'Églis - Lot 261
[Dulaurens, Abbot Henri-Joseph.] - Étrennes aux gens d'Église, or The Candle of Arras. Heroic-comic poem in XVIII songs. Arras, at the expense of the monks, 1775. 1 vol. in-8, ½ havana morocco with corners underlined by gilt fillets, spine decorated (Raparlier). - Slight scratches on the edges. - XVI-152 pp. - New edition of this work first published in 1765 under the title La Chandelle d'Arras. The Holy Candle of Arras is a miracle that took place in 1105: the Virgin appeared to two minstrels and gave them a miraculous candle intended to cure the people of a terrible disease caused by ergot. This title used here by Dulaurens shows well the will of satire of the author who targets the superstitions and the abuses of the Roman Church. Written, it is said, in 15 days, the work unfolds an intrigue full of grotesque and often licentious elements. The work was inspired by Voltaire's La Pucelle d'Orléans. "It is admitted that it is almost as witty, almost as well versified and often more amusing." The Nouvelle biographie universelle says: "The works of the abbé Dulaurens, in verse and in prose, reveal a depraved imagination, a prodigious facility and a deplorable abuse of acquired knowledge". Father Dulaurens was accused of having published ungodly works, including this one, and was sentenced to life imprisonment. He had to flee to Holland and then to Frankfurt and died insane.
