Mac Nab, Maurice. - Chansons du Chat noir, new or harmonized music by Camille Baron, illustrations by H. Gerbault, cover and title by Ferdinand Bac. Paris, au Ménestel, sd. [1890], bound with: Nouvelles chansons du Chat noir, new music by Roland Kohr; illustrations by H. Gerbault. Paris, au Ménestrel, s.d. 2 volumes in 1 vol. large in-4°, ½ brown cloth, gilt and waffle paper boards, covers preserved. - Very slight damage to the edges, small paper loss on the lower cover. - 114, 125-[3] pp. Portraits of Mac Nab by Merwart and Fernand Fau - Collection of 24 songs by Maurice Mac-Nab (1856-1889), one of the most disturbing humorists of the late 19th century, who was part of the Hydropathes and then the Hirsutes before becoming a mainstay of Rodolphe Salis' Chat Noir cabaret. His texts often appeal to the nonsense and announce, with a century of advance, the humor of a Pierre Desproges by the blackness of the subject and the detachment with which the worst horrors are professed. His most famous masterpiece remains the Grand métingue du Métropolitain. Pleasant album abundantly illustrated by Henri Gerbault with the covers in color of Ferdinand Bac and Henri Gerbault.
