Chardin, Jean. - Voyages de Mr. le chevalier Chardin en Perse et autres lieux de l'orient, contenant le voyage de Perse de Paris à Ispahan capitale de l'empire de Perse[...]. Amsterdam, Jean-Louis de Lorme, 1711. 10 vol. in-12, blond calf with ornate spine - Several bites cracked, most corners pierced, small tears to several folding plates. Missing plates XXXVIII and LIX - [12], 254; 334; 285; 280; 312; 328; 448; 255; 308; 220, [82] pp. 77 plates (out of 79 announced), portrait of Chardin in frontispiece. Third edition but first complete edition of this famous account of Jean Chardin's travels in Persia. Jeweler, trader, traveler, he went to Persia and India in 1665, to trade in diamonds. He returned to Persia in August 1671, this time making a long journey that led him to Isfahan in June 1673, accompanied by the draftsman Guillaume-Joseph Grelot. He stayed four years in Persia, learning Persian, Turkish and Arabic in order to become better acquainted with Persian culture. Back in France and following the persecutions of the Protestants, he went to England where he was knighted by King Charles II. He published his first edition in London in 1686, then a second edition in Amsterdam in 1711 which is certainly the most estimated. His report remains today one of the most faithful and precise that we have on Persia. The plates that accompany the text give a good idea of the landscapes, monuments, and costumes that Chardin observed very accurately.
