Pottinger, Henry. - Travels in Beluchistan and Sindhy, followed by a geographical and historical description of these two countries. Translated from the English by J.-B.-B. Eyriès. Paris, Gide fils, 1818. 2 vols. in-8, half green glazed calf, spine cold-stamped with motifs (lyre, boat) - Worn headbands, small scattered foxing - VIII, VI, 465, 352 pp. folding map - Henry Pottinger (1789-1856) went to India at the age of 14 to enlist in the navy. He was finally accepted into the army. In 1806, he undertook an expedition to Baluchistan (a region straddling Pakistan and Iran) in order to assess the risks of an invasion of India by the French army. He was one of the first Europeans to venture into these then almost unknown territories and the first to give a precise description of them.
