Aringhi, Paul. - Roma subterranea novissima in qua antiqua christianorum et praecipue martyrum coemeteria, tituli, monimenta, epithaphia, inscriptiones, ac nobiliora sanctorum sepulchra... Arnhem, J. Fr. Hagium, 1671. In-18, bound in full contemporary vellum, handwritten title on spine - [11 ff. title, to the reader, index, errata, calendar], 630 pp;, [15 ff.] Illustrated with an engraved allegorical frontispiece, 51 engraved plates h-t and numerous drawings or engravings in-t representing among others inscriptions. The folding map of Rome is missing. Antonio Bosio (1575 or 1576- 1629), considered "the father of Christian archaeology", devoted 35 years of his life to historical research in the catacombs of Rome. The resulting work was published posthumously in 1632-1635 under the title Roma Sotterranea. In 1651, Paolo Aringhi (1600-1676) published a Latin translation in folio format, with additional comments. It is joined: Marien Vasi Romain. - Itinéraire instructif de Rome ou description générale des monumens antiques et modernes et des ouvrages les plus remarquables de peinture, de sculpture et d'architecture de cette célèbre ville et d'une partie de ses environs... Rome, Imprimerie de Pagliarini, 1792. 2 volumes in-12 with continuous pagination, bound in one volume, modern binding in full shagreened calf. First plate with a gilt frame spangled with fleurons and an oval metal cameo medallion, with a double row of flowers surrounding the portraits of a Roman general and his wife (possible portraits of prince Murat and caroline Bonaparte?). Smooth spine decorated with 3 gilt fleurons, black title page - Illustrated with a portrait of Pius VI, a folding map of Rome, 10 engraved pll. h-t and 39 engraved vignettes in-t including 2 in the titles.
