Louise Charlotte Ernestine Gautier (1845-1917), known as Judith Gautier, is the daughter of Théophile Gautier and was the wife of the fickle Catulle Mendès, from whom she divorced in 1896. She became famous in letters for her passion for Asia (China and Japan in particular), for her pioneering role in the analysis of Wagnerian mysticism, and for her passionate relations with the French literary avant-garde, from Victor Hugo to Charles Baudelaire through Gustave Flaubert. She was also the first woman to enter the Académie Goncourt, in 1910.
