Beauvoir, Simone de - Autograph letter signed to the novelis - Lot 241
Beauvoir, Simone de - Autograph letter signed to the novelist Thyde Monnier. S.d. S.d. [1949], 3 pp. in-8, on paper at her address 11 rue de la Bûcherie. Superb letter that follows the publication of Le Deuxième Sexe : "I am happy that you liked my second volume. It is obviously the one where I gave the most of myself". She then compares the way in which they were able to carry out their careers (Thyde Monnier tells in the first volume of her Memoirs "Moi" also published in 1949 the difficulties encountered in her youth and her fight to escape a life imposed by her family). "I admire the fact that with a life so restricted in your beginnings you never submitted [to be submissive?] You are a beautiful example for women [...] On the contrary, I had a very easy life since my parents always intended me to earn a living and I was able to turn immediately to the intellectual career that I was aiming at. I immediately found the friendships and support that I needed intellectually and emotionally. I did not have to struggle like you." The words of Thyde Monnier are also precious to her because they let her glimpse "the possibility of a certain feminine solidarity in which it is not always easy to believe, in which however I believe for my part deeply [...]" Beautiful hand extended and beautiful homage paid to a writer who refused the male domination and managed despite a thousand difficulties to build her life.
