Halévy, Ludovic - Degas, Edgar. - The Cardinal Family. Paris - Lot 322
Halévy, Ludovic - Degas, Edgar. - The Cardinal Family. Paris, A. Blaizot et fils, 1938. In-4 paperback, filled cover - [1 f., fx-title and justification on verso], 161 pp. and [1 f., finished print]. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author in black and 33 monotypes including 31 h-t (6 in color and 25 in black) and 2 in-t in black. Unique edition at 350 copies all on vellum of Rives, watermarked with the name of the publisher (n° 218). Edgar Degas rediscovers the technique of the monotype (which had been invented in the 17th century by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione) in the years 1876-1877. He made, among others, monotypes for the "Petites Cardinales" (1880) and used this technique for "La Famille Cardinal" (1883). However, these single edition works were not reproduced before the Blaizot edition, which entrusted the care of their transposition on copper to Maurice Potin.
