Charles Artus (1897-1978) - Lot 149
Charles Artus (1897-1978) Egyptian cat's head Edition circa 1930-1950 Bronze with reddish brown patina Artist's print signed " CH ARTUS " on the back Bears the founder's stamp " C. VALSUANI CIRE PER- DUE". H. 12,3 cm, rests on a black marble base from Belgium H. 17 cm Charles Artus was introduced to sculpture in the workshop of Edouard Navellier. Thanks to his regular visits to the Jardin des Plantes, the sculptor specializes in animal sculpture. His meeting with François Pompon, whose assistant he became, pushed him to move away from the naturalist style of his training and to concentrate on volume while maintaining the study of the character of the animal. In 1931, he joined the "Group of Twelve" and exhibited at numerous shows including the Animalists, Autumn, French Artists and Independents. His prolific production and his particular style allowed Charles Artus to become one of the great animal sculptors of the interwar period and to acquire an international reputation. The Cat's Head that we present was printed in a few rare copies, all of them during the artist's lifetime.
